Randal Schwartz of Stonehenge Consulting, systems administrator, Perl hacker extraordinaire, and oh, yes, convicted felon will be here to talk to us.
Several dc.sage members drove to New Jersey last month to hear Randal speak. He (and this topic) were also an invited presentation at LISA'96. Randal will talk about the events that led to his arrest and conviction for performing well-intentioned actions that he believed at the time were in the best interests of his clients' needs. There has been much controversy on the 'Net about his arrest and conviction. No matter what your opinion, you should take the time to hear the story from the perpetrator/victim's own mouth and ask your own questions.
If you are in systems administration or just a computer hacker in general, this one is worth hiring a babysitter for. Cancel your date, skip your Aikido class, and postpone the head-crash of that critical system disk for another night, and come out to hear the story of Randal's arrest and conviction from the man who was there to live the story.
Where and When
This event will be held in the Lipsett Auditorium
of the
National Institutes of Health
(NIH) in Bethesda, MD on Wednesday, October 30. We will
start promptly at 7:30 PM, traffic allowing. You can get
there by
Metro (the subway),
by driving,
or by sharing a ride.
Some of us will probably
go out after the talk
with Randal.
Getting There By Metro
You can get there
by Metro and that may be the easiest way to dodge traffic.
Get off at the Medical Center stop, walk west on South Drive,
bear right onto Center Drive, bear left with Center, and that
big building that looks like a hospital is the Clinical Care
Center (Building 10).
Or Just Follow This Map
The Auditorium is on the first floor,
in the Southeast Corner of the building. If you find Building
10 (or the CCC), there will be security guards there to help
you find the auditorium.
The Auditorium is in the Clinical Care
Center of NIH, in Bethesda, MD. This is a Metro-accessible
event.
Driving to the NIH Campus
So you insist on driving instead of taking the
Metro? Ok ... suit yourself,
but don't ask me how long to allow ... DC traffic
it totally unpredictable.
NIH is kinda in the middle of North Bethesda. If you are coming from the Washington Beltway from the East or the North, (Route 95 North, Prince Georges County, etc.), I'd suggest exitting on route 355, and going South (take back-to-back left turns at the light after exitting) on Route 355 (toward Washington). The NIH campus will be on your right. Follow this Map to parking under the Clinical Center (Building 10).
If you are coming from the Washington Beltway from the West or the South (i.e., Northern Virginia), you should take the Old Georgetown Road Exit South (toward Bethesda), and the NIH campus will be on your left. Follow this Map to parking under the Clinical Center (Building 10).
You may park in the garage under the Clinical Center after 7 PM. Tell the man at the gate that you are here for the presentation at the Lipsett Auditorium. The Auditorium is on the first floor of the Clinical Center.
Ride Sharing Arrangements
dc.sage
encourages members to arrange for ride-sharing.
If you plan to attend and have space in your car
to take someone, please take the time to
send us E-mail.
Be sure to include where you are coming from (on the
way to NIH), where you are going to (on the way home
from NIH), how many additional people you can accommodate
(without surgery) in your car, and some contact info
(daytime and evening phone number, E-mail address, etc).
If you need a ride and Metro won't work for you, please send us E-mail with where you are coming from (on the way to NIH), where home is, how many people are coming with you who also don't have rides, and some contact info (same as above).
What Will Happen After Randal Speaks?
Some of the
dc.sage
folks will probably go out somewhere after
the presentation, probably to find a restaurant
where we can talk and eat and drink. Randal
also does a mean Karaoke, but
I don't
know where to go for Karaoke in Bethesda on
a Wednesday night. If you have suggestions for
this,
please let me know.
If You Are Still Lost
In case you are totally lost, you are flying in from
out of town, or you are dropping in by parachute,
here is an aerial view of NIH.
If all else fails, you may page me. If you go this route, please send me a SHORT (TINY ... less than 200 characters with NO SIGNATURE or PGP or any extras) E-mail to my pager. If this gets abused, I'll simply take the alias down, so use it *SPARINGLY*.
