This is an experiment. We are experimenting with new ways to increase communications among Systems Administrators in the area. For starters, we'll set up an AOL Instant Messenger chat room. This works with AIM version 3.0 or later automagically on PC's and Macs. If you don't have AIM installed, you'll get a web page telling you so. Just click on this link to start, or join, the chat.
If you are on a UNIX box, you may want to try TiK, the Tcl-based AIM client, or one of the clones. I can't tell you where to get it because it disappeared from AOL's AIM web site. However, you might find something useful at Fuzzface's TiK Page. Once you have TiK, you can create a menu to get you easily to the dc.sage chat. Add the following code to your .tikrc:
quickchat::register "dc.sage" "Washington DC SysAdmin Group" 5
You access our chat from a menu once TiK has started:
Tools->Quick Chat->dc.sage
And you should be in our chat room.
I am still researching a way to access the room from "Quick Buddy", which is a browser-based version of AIM. The name of our chat room is "Washington DC SysAdmin Group" but I have not figured out how to enter "our room". The default seems to be to set up chats in a private exchange area. We need to figure out how to hit "Exchange 5" from Quick Buddy. However, there are plenty of AIM clones out there that should let you play.
Some of the folks at SAGE has set up an IRC chat called #sage-members. You can get to it from any of the following IRC servers:
