The Ongoing History of dc.sage

dc.sage began in the mind of Ken Mayer at LISA '94. He held a BOF session where he found other interested members, and when he returned to D.C., he set up the mailing list at his employer of the time. Ken will always be regarded as the founder of , even though he has since moved on to live on the Left Coast (California). Today, there are 182 bona-fide, card-carrying members of dc.sage.

Things began rolling when we started to have physical meetings, and we've been meeting on a regular monthly basis now. We acquired a WWW presence in November 1995, and in January, 1996, we took a group field trip to the National Cryptologic Museum.

The dc.sage web space took a turn for the better on October 26, 1996 when we established our own presence on the Internet. Our domain is dc-sage.org. For a while our web pages and mailing lists were hosted by Heller Information Services. We've since moved onto a machine of our own, although we are forever grateful to Paul Heller for helping us get started.

Recently, we've formalized the membership process ... slightly. We now require that members authenticate themselves before accessing some of the web pages that include E-mail addresses of other members. We made this change because yet another technical recruiter saw fit to harrass our membership by using our web pages. So ... now you have to log in in order to see the archives of the mailing lists or who's who in dc.sage. Thank you Jeff G. of I.Q. Solutions, Inc. for annoying us into action.
