dc.sage - Password Reset Request

Access to some dc.sage online resources requires that you know your dc.sage web ID and password. All members of dc.sage were sent an E-mail message with a web ID and a temporary password.

If you followed the instructions in the E-mail, you would have changed the password to something unique. The web ID will remain the same. Now you have forgotten that password and/or web ID and you've decided to access a dc.sage page that requires authentication. If that is your story, then read on ... this form is for you.

On the other hand, if you have not yet joined dc.sage, this is the wrong page for you to be pondering. In order to join dc.sage initially, you must first submit a membership application. Do not attempt to bypass that process with this form. You will be ignored ... or perhaps you will annoy someone, and then be ignored. (In particular, please note: this is NOT the form to use in order to reset your AIM password. dc.sage has NOTHING to do with AIM; if you are having problems accessing your AIM account, please use the AIM Lost Password Page to request assistance.) If you haven't joined yet, fill in the membership form.

Submission of this form constitutes an implicit acknowledgement that you have read the most recent copy of the dc.sage Privacy Policy. Submission of this form also constitutes an explicit agreement to abide by that policy with respect to dc.sage information services and data.

Notes - Pease Read Before Submitting!

Submission of this form with new data (i.e., different from what we have on file) will not change anything (E-mail addresses in mailing lists, directory information, hat size, etc.). All this form will do is get your password reset. You will receive an E-mail with a temporary password when this has been done.
These forms are processed by a human being ... one of several who work full-time as a sysadmin and have a life as well ... it may take several days, or possibly even a week or two, before this form gets processed and you receive a response. You are welcome to resubmit it (tomorrow) if you are getting impatient ... but that may not expedite the process.
Please submit this form only if you already were issued a dc.sage Web ID, and you agree to our privacy policy. This form must not be used as an alternative to our membership application form.
A word about security: Yes, we know that E-mailing passwords (even randomly generated ones such as ours) in cleartext E-mail is sub-optimal. For some members, especially those whose PGP keys we know, we could use encryption. We know that allowing people to request a password reset through a web form is, at best, weak, as far as authentication goes. The security weaknesses are compromises to maintainability and usability. However, before you say "how stupid" ... consider this ... the HTTP Basic Security Model (BSM) tosses your web ID and password back to the web server in the clear every time you access a web page; the primary purpose of authentication on this web server is to discourage misbehavior (i.e., spamming members) by maintaining an audit trail ... theft of your dc.sage identity would cause, at worst, some mild embarrassment (we're not a bank); finally ... it's a "club" web server on an isolated network ... the web ID doesn't give you access to anything sensitive.
